But what exactly IS a Boutique Amp?

Specially made to order, or not of a known brand....?

Have heard the phrase used many times, just never really knew what it meant.

Intonator - I'll give you my impression of it.

A "Boutique Amp" is: A NON-assembly line method of building an amp by
a single or very small group of experienced amp builders.

hows that?

Don't forget expensive and usually hand wired. Limited production.

So...

A company like Fender or Gibson, even tho they mass produce a lot of their stuff, is still "capable" of having a Boutique amp in their line up.

Sure... handmade amps of special designs in limited numbers, that's boutique enough for me.

Thanks for all the answers.

Will probably never own one, but the labeling of them had me curious.

I just posted in another thread about my amusement with the sudden "buzzword" status of "boutique," like anything "boutique" is the magic answer to the universe.

I understand the difference in quality and sound (in the hands of someone who can make the most of the difference in response and musicality) but my eyes roll when people want to chat "boutique" and they don't really know what they're talking about. I mean, I guess I court it if I borrow a Komet for a gig...

It kinda sounds like you are harshing here, and I don't know why... boutique is a pretty slippery word. So the original poster said, "I'm not sure what boutique is" and a few people gave up their ideas.

If you have tried amps and you loved some boutique amp, well.. what's the prob? If you think that you loved it because it is boutique (designed for a certain sound, hand made, etc) well .. you can't be too far wrong there.

oh, I apologize if it seemed I was harshing on you guys, I wasn't. I was harshing on people who annoy me in r/t... I guess you'd have to know who I'm talking about. The kind of people who get picky about which Tube Screamer someone has, but can't play a Ramones song convincingly.

I mean, I am a jerk, but not an inexplicable one.

LOL.. it's all good. I'm sure those people are out there. I may be one of them.

Thing is, I suck.. but I can hear the difference between a good amp and a good amp simulator. I hear it when I play more so than when I listen,

Even though I am no good, I really think my amps improve my 'expressive ability'. I certainly enjoy it more, so I guess I kind of sympathize with these guys to some degree.

Your point about Boutique vs. old standard amps is right on the money. I have one of each and they are both excellent. Boutique is not a requirement for great tube sound. 200 bucks in the right place will get you there.

Welcome aboard...

Interesting thread. I play a somewhat Booteek Amp but a rather unknown Booteek Amp not real espensive as these things go but not cheap either. Most of the Boutique Gushing makes me sick. The Amps I play are built by a guy I know who has worked on my amps for many years and I want to support him. He might as well be a starving artist being in the business of amp repairs and building.

The idea that if you spend a fortune on an amp you will get some kind of magical tone is a pipe dream fabricated by folks that must justify their insane amp purchases. I get magical Tone out my Pignose. My little cheaply made Orange AD15 rocks.

The thing that really gets my goat is the idea of the Trainwreck and Dumble Clones. If they are priced really exspensive they must bee good right? Wrong , dead wrong. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Anyway I would focus on Booteek so much as playing what you like, enjoying, and getting satisfaction out of that. Very Happy
