Hello everyone,
My name is Adam, I'm new to this forum and also fairly inexperienced in amps and which ones can get which tones. If anyone could give me some advice that would be much appreciated. I'm looking to emulate a Johnny Marr style clean tone, ie chiming and sparkly, but with some nice chorus too. As I'm on a tight budget I'm also hoping that the same amp on a separate channel could provide me with a hint of warm distortion. I am looking for a very natural overdriven sound, in a Pete Townshend style, rather than any kind of thick distortion. The only other spec I have is that I'd like it to perform well at high volumes and have enough power to fill a decent sized club venue.
I have read that both the Vox AC30 and Roland JC 120 are great for clean, chiming sounds. Anyone got any views on these amps? Could I perhaps use an overdrive pedal through one of these to get my crunch sound? I have also been recommended the Marshall DSL for a warm distorted sound. Is it best to go for an amp that has your sound all in, or go for a few choice pedals to get the specifics? Finally, whichever amp I decide on, I'd be playing a Fender Strat through this, probably with a combination of two single coils and one humbucker. Thanks very much for reading this epic post, looking forward to any input.
cheers,
Adam |

| Fender Twin or Super Reverb. Just going on field trips to every music store you can find will help. |

I have 2 Vox AC15s and a JC120 which both have wonderful clean sounds but also really different. The JC120 is like a small PA with guitar input. It is shimmering white clean. I used mine for guitar synth and when I wanted to do regular guitar I warmed it up with a Mesa Boogie V-Twin.
Acoustic guitar sounded great straight in to the JC120.
Vox on the other hand has a warm tube clean. Undistorted until you drive it but still warm and harmonic and unique. Best tube clean anywhere. And I love the overdrive too. It's a natural break up, not over the top. |

| I noticed you said you were on slight budget. My opinion is the Vox is a good choice and also try playing a Marshall AVT50x. I think both of those choices might fit your needs. Marshall now own Vox, if that means anything to you I dont know. Goodluck, just try a bunch out at a trusted store. |

| Recently played the Marshall Vintage Modern 50 watt combo, lovely break up but the clean sound isn't the best. For a budget the Fender deluxe or Vox AC30cc2 are pretty good. Picked up a Vox 50th anniversary handwired AC15 head and cab recently and that's good if you can stretch the extra bit. Marshall don't own Vox btw. Vox are owned by Japanese company Korg, and Korg distribute Marshall in the USA |
