O have a 1957 Magnatone 260 appx 35 watts. It has 2x12" jensens p12r's that are shot. I want to replace them with Celestion Blue or Gold. The Blues are rated at 15W and the Gold 50W. I am wondering which is the best way to go? I mostly play on my 1954 Gibson Super 300. I want a more sublte jazz sound. My choices are:
A. 2 blues totsl of 30W - might distort too early
B. 1 gold 50W even though the cabinet is made for 2 12"s
3. 2 gold total of 100W. Might be too hard to push?
any help would be appreciated
Thanks |

Which speakers sound best to you?
I would not opt for the single speaker configuration.
As for the Blue's distorting too early, I don't think I'd be concerned with that. If your amp is rated at 35 watts only half of that goes to each speaker. You wouldn't be pushing the Blues very hard at all. Unless you meant each blues was rated at 15 watts?
I would get the Gold's if that were the case and never worry about blowing a speaker.
Please keep in mind, speaker impedance matching is extremely important. |

Thanks for the info. The Blues are rated at 15W each. The only worry I have about outting two (2) golds is that they are rated at 50W each and it being a 35w amp, do you think they will be to hartd to push?
Thanks |

As long as they both are rated at the same impedance (blue vs gold) there should be no difference.
A speaker rated at 15 watts can dissipate 15 watts of heat. It does not mean it requires 15 watts to operate.
If it were mine, I would get the gold's and never worry about blowing a speaker. |
