I've owned this excellent amp for several years now - it was made in the 1960's by 'Sound Musical Instrument' a division of 'Sound Electronic Corporation, Mineola, New York'. The reverb amp, Model 505R, uses a pair of 7868 tubes in the output and five 12AX7 tubes. It has a deep reverb and quite good tremolo. The amp is extremely well built and board design is similar to the early Fenders from the same period of the 1960's. The sound is truly fantastic, quite dynamic and vibrant, great overtones and excellent projection. It creates very pleasant distortion when pushed little hard - a guitar player dream!
I could not find ANY info about this amp or this company in all my guitar/amp books , and there is nothing on this company on the internet.
Is anybody there who knows anything about this amp or the company? I would appreciate anything!
Greetings from Chicago,
Chris

I can't help you but I wish you luck!
I have a contraption that is absolutely great, but like you the company is
no longer and available information is basically nil.
(I have long thought about making a web page for it, and try to figure out
and post as much info on it as I can... but procrastination is a strong point
of mine).
Fortunately for you, yours is an amp that you could document, take voltage
readings, and etc. |

Hey Chris,
Just picked up the same amp as you were looking for info on. Same name, model, tube line up etc. The head looks to have been seperated from the cab?
Looks like you may have had pics of yours posted? If they are still available I'd SURELY appreciate a peek at them.
I've just started cleaning it up and am hopeful it can be revived. Looks promising at this point! Thanks in advance for your help. AND there seems to be no info available (yet) on this one.
Best,
The Oldcatfish |
