I recently purchased a used 1987x (50w plexi) with the effects loop, used on ebay. The amp seems to be in great shape but I've had some problems. Simply put, the amp shuts down. I seem to be blowing it. The tubes are all lit but something inside must be blowing. It's in for repair now so I don't know what's going on with it yet.
Here's the twist, I always have the amp cranked when I play and apparently I had the head on 16 ohms and the cabinet on 4 ohms. Could the ohms be the problem? Has anyone had trouble with this particular head?
Thanks

Yes, absolutely! When the impedance isn't matched properly, you're delivering either too much or too little current to the speakers. Running 8 or 16 ohms into a cab rated at 4 ohms can burn the speakers out, wear out your tubes, or blow the output transformer in the amp. Marshalls also happen to be one of the most sensitive amps when it comes to proper impedance.
