Hey there! I just bought a new Goth Les Paul Studio, and now I need a new practice amp to go with it. I was currently looking at the "Rogue GS-100R" is this a decent amp? Does anybody know how good the two channels sound on it? I want an amp with some decent features that won't fall apart on me either. And I need one that will help bring out the tone of my guitar and not completely kill it. Any help or suggestions for different amps or input on the Rogue would be very helpful. Thanks!

| bullpunk- an old timer friend of mine bought one of the smaller Rogue's. It reminds me a lot of the Peavey Bandit. Good clean channel and transistor clipping distortion, which is not as harmonic as tube. If your not in a hurry, and willing to look around, I bet you could find a nice used tube amp to go with that new Les Paul. |

if you want a practice amp for punk rock and you don't want to mess with distortion pedals, I would go for the peavey bandit. It's small and has good cruncy distortion. I wouldn't buy anything rogue makes. _________________ Do the Du. Husker Du. |

I wouldn't either paganicon, but I don't have to. Someone on a tight budget and in a hurry might get started twanging with a Rogue. It would serve until something better came along. It seems like most players buy a better guitar than amp the first time.(Ask me how I know). A good guitar can't make a cheap amp sound good. A good amp can make a cheap guitar sound good. I think there are still used tube amps out there at great prices if a person is willing to spend some time looking. |

Quite true.. I didn't know crap about anything when I bought my Dean Markley 15 watt amp.
So it probably is better to get the cheapest thing possible when you're starting out and you can't tell a good sound from a bad one.
I was quite content with my Dean markley and rocktek distortion pedal until I started learning what it was all about.
What was your first amp, Tim? _________________ Do the Du. Husker Du. |

| I worked all summer washing cars and mowing lawns. I bought an orange Grestch " Chet Atkins "double cutaway (so far so good) and the cheapest no reverb amp that Grestch made. It still sounded good though. I also traded in a Gibson acoustic that I had bought new the previous summer as part of the deal. This will kill you. You could walk in a music store back then (early sixties), and see Telecasters, Strats, sunburst Paul's, Goldtops, old Martins from the 50's dirt cheap, because everybody wanted the latest thing. Did I mention used tweed Bassmen traded in because of no reverb, and cheap! |

evything's up to you budget, bullpunk...TIm got right. But you'll have to deal with the kind of music you want to do...My first amp was an AC30 used back in the late seventies...then I turn plaiyng a la "Land speed record" (HuskerDu) and I found an used Marshall MKII 200W for bass...I bought it used. My personal suggestion is to look around and find something that will allow you not to use pedals or things like that...I mean, from your signature I can understand you are listening to "At the Drive In" or "Sparta" kind of bands...the best for you I think it would be an used valve combo (at the beginning) to turn later in a valve head with 4*12 cabinet. Search an used Fender combo (twin reverb I thing would be the best choice -Bob Mould kind of sound i.e.) or a marshall 4104 but remember...two speakers for a combo plays better than one. I don't like to mess with transistor combos..;but a Line6 Flextone can be quite good too (even is not that powerful)...
I don't know..;a good choice now can make you save money in the future, buy used. |

Tim... one word: D'oh!
GGK,
always good to see another bob fan. I just recently stopped trying to be Bob and gave my old MXR dist + a rest. It seemed to word good in the studio, but I could never find a satisfactory live sound. _________________ Do the Du. Husker Du. |

Also, newbie.. keep in mind that all those ATDI and sparta sounds come from oodles and oodles of pedals. You won't hear very many natural amp sounds, except for the jangly stuff on acrobatic tenament. _________________ Do the Du. Husker Du. |

paganicon...to have the bob sound I'm only using a tube king and a Marshall 2204 with 5881 instead of EL34. To have a nearly close ATDI or Quicksand I' using a two channel Sound Expander and two amps. A Laney VHR100 and a Marshall jcm800 2204. Laney drives the Marshall through the Sound Expander..and what I have is a powerful/fat but clean distortion.
I don't think bullpunk wants to spend that much money (I collected my gear during 20 years of playing), so I suggested him an used combo...next step could be an ADA MP1 multi-fx...used. |

what are your settings with the tube king and the marshall?
and a used combo should be everyone's first amp. _________________ Do the Du. Husker Du. |

paganicon...
my set up could not be useful since my jcm800 is too modified in the preamp stage and I don't use EL34 but 5881 in the final, but...
If I want to use tube king (tk999 the gold box with a ECC83 in it), I use the low input in the Marshall, use bass at maximum level, mid at two, high at 4 presence 4...in the tube king almost the same levels. I worked a while lately to have my marshall doing the same effect without the tube king...I have done a good work in the preamp stage and now I can not use tube king anymore using the high level input. |

If you look on Ebay the Fender bassman heads from the mid 60's are plantiful and at a good price. I see them going from $200.00 to 400.00 all the time and they are 50 tube watts (louder that 100 SS watss) and sound good ussually. They are excellent candidates for modding later on too. Ive turned a few into SLO 50 heads or marshall clones and they sound awesome. Just food for thought.
Cheers
