After playing about a year and a half with a fender strat and 50w solid state Marshall amp I am ready for an upgrade. I received a new Epiphone Les Paul standard in Transparent Amber for my birthday this past weekend, I can honestly say the the Epi plays as good as it looks.

Anyway, I'm looking for advise on a new amp. I like to play mostly rock & Nu metal, but I would like to get into classic rock and blues a bit more as well. I recently played a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and Line 6 Spider 212, and am also interested in maybee trying a Marshall Dsl 401 as I am partial to Marshall amps. My problem is I want it all and there doesnt seem to be an amp that fits the bill completely -as well as fitting my budget of $400-$700.

The line6 had a great nu metal sound and some neat effects, but I wast'nt super impressed with its 'clean tones' and I am worried that I might be better off with a simpler amp with added Boss effects. The Fender has a great clean and slightly overdriven sound but seemed to lack that nu metal punch though I have not heard it through a distortion pedal. I have not tried to Marshall tube yet, I have read this amp runs 'hot' . I also am not sure If I should go tube over solid state, It seems It might be a pain to replace the tubes every so often. I would like to stay Marshall but as I read more and more it seems you can get the same Marshall quality out there at a much more reasonable price. Is there any multi-effects unit with a tube preamp driving a good solid-state amp avail?

Any advice appreciated

Why not look for a used Hotrod Deville or Peavey Classic 50
