Boss BR 4 track

I am just returning to the guitar world after 10 years without playing so it's as if I was in a time warp or something. The new stuff out there is mind boggling. I just saw a Boss BR (not sure if there is a model #) 4 track recorder for not too much money. Is this a good recorder/effects processor? Would I be better off buying individual effects or something like a dedicated effects processor like a digitech RP, and a seperate 8 track recorder? I will play at home and some jamming with other people in the near future. I know it's a matter of personal taste but with all of the combination devices out there it is hard for me to know what direction to go in. Thanks.
