Well...... When I play my Marshall VS30R practice amp and use the clean channel on it, it breaks up a little when I strum to hard. I am wondering If the speaker has been blown and if its time to replace the 10inch speaker? Also I was thinking that the pickup on my guitar might be providing to much output for my little 30watt amp causing it to break up. Is that a possibility? I use a Seymour Duncan Invader in bridge position. If the speaker is blown, could I replace the 4 ohm Marshall speaker and install a mesa 8 ohm in place of it? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

| GuitarGuy503, does anyone you know have a 10" speaker you can install to see if that's the problem? As far as too hot a pick-up overloading the input, turn the volume down on the guitar and see if the problem persists. If you change to a Mesa speaker, stay with the same ohm speaker that came with the amp. |

"Turn the volume down on the guitar"? Is that what those knobs are for? Tim, go wash your mouth out.
The eight ohm Messa replacement speaker won't hurt the amp but it probably won't be so loud.
Front end distortion/breakup cause by pushing too much signal into the preamp never does sound very nice but it won't hurt the amp either. Even most pedals and overdrive devices full-out wont damage the amp. Although the rule of thumb is: If it sounds like it hurts... it probably does.
To check the speaker remove it from the box and laying it on it's back gently, with all eight fingers fanned out around the cone (elbows up), push on the cone and release several times as if trying to help a dead person breathe. If it makes a rubbing noise then the voice coil has probably been warmed up and distorted. Check this link on how to solve that problem... if it's blown, try it... you have nothing to lose...
I'd be surprised if the speaker is blown out, because nowerdays manufacturers build in plenty of headroom when choosing components for their amps. My guess that a VS30R would have a speaker rated at about 50 or watts.
