I've been playing bass for a little over a year and i don't really know about amps really well. i just wanted to know if you can add a cab to a combo amp to make it louder.

For all practical purposes, no. Depending on what kind of amp it is, tube or transistor, how the cabinet is wired, what the speaker combinations are, the best you could hope for would be a negligible boost if you cut your ohms in half. Most combo amps disconnect the internal speakers when you use the extension speaker jack. If things are wired so that you double your ohms instead of halving them, and you have a tube amp, you're going to cook your transformer - and relatively quickly. Playing bass through a combo amp is not a good idea anyway, the cabinets are not ported for the low frequencies.
