I saw the thread below about removing half the power tubes to reduce wattage. My question specifically is, is it OK to do that in a Vox AC30CC?

In another forum
(http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=209884)
someone said that when that's done one should reduce the resistance setting by half. The NeoDog in the AC30CC1 is rated at 16 ohms, and setting the output switch to 8 ohms is easy enough... but should I then be using an 8 ohm speaker?

Before I go ahead and start a fire, blow out my speaker, fry my output transformer or something equally stupid, can someone verify if it is safe to proceed as described with this particular amp?

Update: I posted the same question in that same thread on TGP and got this answer from Doug Roccaforte, which I think is definitely worth sharing:

Quote:
If you pull two tubes on your AC30 the remaining two will blow up instantly!!!!! DO NOT TRY THIS

To everyone, never pull tubes on a Cathode biased amplifier unless the manufacturer says you can.

The reason is, if all 4 tubes share the same cathode resistor,
this value will be too low for 2 tubes.
AC30= 50 ohm resistor for 4 tubes.
You would need a 150 ohm resistor for two in this amp.

So that's that, I guess!

I just installed a THD Hot Plate 16 ohn attenuator, even though you can run this amp at around 20 watts, its still loud for small venues. I love the Hot Plate, it opens these amps up and they just sing. It took about an hour and a half to re-solder the connections though. But, well worth the time and money. I'am a little dissapointed however with the pain of removing the chassis to change tubes though, what the hecks up with that.
I've always had Fender amps and they were a breeze to retube.
Anyway, enjoy the amp they do sound great.

I hear you brother. In the store they said it was a piece of cake. I bet the guy never even tried to change tubes in an AC30...what bothers me the most, is that those things aren't explained in the manual.
