| I currently have a peavey 5150, was looking for a cabinet that would give me a nice smooth midrange sound, i originally wanted a 4X12 with a set of altec 417-8h's, but the speakers are pretty tough to find for a descent price. Was wondering if there any other alnico v magnet speakers out that were similar and would produce a similar sound. Was also curious about the wattage. The 5150 is rated at 120 watts, if i get a cabinet with 4 speakers rated each at 30 watts, how careful would i have to be so i wouldnt blow them; how would the sound of that cabinet vary in sound from one with 4 speakers rated at 100 watts each (altec 417 8h's) |

I have a VTM120 that will melt a cab with speakers rated at 120 total watts. GarRunTeed!
That said, my VTM likes cheap lower wattage speakers over expensive higher rated speakers when pushed at higher volumes. When I plug in 70-80 watt 4x12's it sounds thin and sharp, with 30-40 watt speakers (all Celestions) it sounds great. YMMV. No way I would run my 120 into them (4x30 watts) at full blast though :-)
For some reason 25-30 watt speakers are common, 80 and up are also common, in between at 40-60 watts are not common.
I'm fortunate... I buy and sell cabs like a sheik dumping wives and have the leisure time to try it on my cat, Wife and neighbors! So far my fave cab is a 4x10 bass cab rated at 200 watts. I plan on trying more 4x10 bass cabs to see if this is a common thing. I know 10" guitar cabs I have sound piercing and not usable in my Peavey.
Regards,
Gary |
