Hello, I'm having trouble with my amp and discovered this board. Please forgive my lack of knowledge (and my choice in amplifiers, I bought the thing when I was 14).
I have a Crate digital 2x12, I believe the model number is DX212 or something similar, but I don't believe this is necessarily relevant.
At some point recently the thing started making god-awful, rip-roaring static belches. This amp has always had an omnipresent "hum," but this noise is not volume-knob dependent. The volume can be turned to 0 and the burst of noise comes through loud enough to make you jump to the ceiling. It's like an exponentially amplified version of the sound you get when you touch the 1/4" cable to something that conducts.
I just want the thing to function as well as it CAN. Here are all the factors I can think to include:
-Only happens when something is in the input jack. Nothing need be attached to the other end of the 1/4" cable (i.e. it's not my guitar).
-Happens to every cable (i.e. it's not my cable).
-Positive lead to one of the speaker cones is broken off.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If there's any other information that would help, I can try to figure it out. Thanks in advance for your ideas!
Best,
Preston |

Welcome to the Forum!
Wow! That sounds like some serious belching. It sounds like a problem with your input jack, I would look into that first. Huge pops like that can blow speakers, not to mention other things in the circuits. About the missing lead on one of your speakers, that means that speaker is not making any noise, right? You could be running your transformer with an improper ohm load, and that's not good either.
Stay tuned,
